Accreditation for Schools

VAISEF supports specialized schools through educational accreditation, professional learning, collaboration and advocacy.

Educational Accreditation

VAISEF accredits the educational programs provided by specialized schools in Virginia. Accreditation is a peer-review process focused on educational quality, accountability and continuous improvement.

For facilities that also provide residential services, VAISEF accreditation applies to the educational program. Housing, residential treatment and overnight care are licensed and monitored separately by the appropriate state agencies.

What the Review Covers

Accreditation reviewers consider the educational experience as a whole:

  • Educational leadership and governance
  • Curriculum, instruction and student learning
  • Assessment practices and educational outcomes
  • Qualified personnel and student support services
  • Organizational effectiveness and continuous school improvement

Schools use the process to examine their practices, share evidence and identify opportunities to strengthen their programs.
